Richard J. Schmeelk

Richard J. Schmeelk was born in Long Island, New York, in 1924.

Recognised as one of the leading U.S. investment bankers on the Canadian scene for over three decades, he was an advisor to governments and corporate entities and raised capital for Canadian borrowers in world markets, notably in his role as the manager of global corporate finance efforts of the Salomon Brothers from 1981 to 1986, where he was a General Partner and Executive Committee member until retiring in 1987.

A past American Co-Chairman of the Canadian-American Committee and a past Chairman of the National Policy Association in Washington (D.C.), he established the Richard J. Schmeelk Canada Fellowship to foster a better understanding between English and French Canadians and to create better understanding between government and business.

He has served as Vice-President of the United Nations Advisory Council and he is now an honorary member of the Covenant House National Board.
